About Us

Higher Secondary School Teachers Association (HSSTA)

Who We Are

The Departmental Higher Secondary School Teachers Association (HSSTA) is the premier and only recognized organization for Government Higher Secondary School Teachers in Kerala. Formally recognized under Order No. GO (MS) 22/2011 P & ARD (dated 18/07/2011), HSSTA stands as the largest representative body of its kind in the state.

Our Mission

Our primary mission is to empower teachers, advocate for student success, and elevate the academic standards of Higher Secondary education throughout Kerala. We invite all educators to join hands with HSSTA as we continue to shape the future of our schools.

Our History: The Birth of a Revolution

The landscape of Kerala’s education changed forever on August 1, 1990. As part of a strategic initiative to decouple Pre-degree courses from University education, the Ministry introduced the Senior Secondary course—a move that sparked an educational revolution in the government sector.

Formal Governance: By October 1990, the Senior Secondary Directorate was established to provide dedicated oversight and organization for this growing academic level.

The Launch: The journey began with 31 schools across 31 education districts. Each school hosted a single batch of 60 students, with 16 schools focusing on Science and 15 on Humanities.

The “Plus Two” Era: While officially termed the Senior Secondary course (and later Higher Secondary), the media and public passionately adopted the name “Plus Two.”
